Metropolitan tales

Tangible symptoms of capitalism or expressions of social hardship, attempts at innovation or a return to deja-vu, stones, manhole covers, gaps, archaeological ravines, pavements, builders’ leftovers, crossovers in style or non-style, steps, passages, holes, obstacles… Giulio Obici is the real great “flâneur” of our times. By not producing an imitation oil painting or supposedly famous object, he produced photographic compositions and crisscrossed the city to satisfy his curiosity in those details which call to mind everyday life: billboards, misery, ridiculous shop windows that use urbane relics…, architecture, people, the street, fashion. With his feet firmly on the ground he wanted to investigate and tell about the town, often in relation to spaces which are not particularly attractive, which have been changed by daily use or town planning, adverts and the marketing of everything. (Grazia Neri)

With a detachment which one normally finds in the arts, Giulio Obici gives us a picture of modern life without judging it. For him it is enough to photograph it, to take the most significant  aspects of  this fleeting life, and finding  it amongst our streets and houses and our customs and habits. (Franco Loi)
